India 2016
These images were created during a trip to North India in January and February, 2016. The first week was spent in the holy city of Haridwar, centered around the Ardh Kumbh Mela Hindu celebration, which attracts sadhus (holy men) and passionate pilgrims, many focused on a spiritual cleansing in the Ganges (or Ganga) river, which can be especially propitious during a Kumbh. (Kumbh Mela means "festival of the urn;" and Ardh ("half") signals that this is a smaller Kumbh.) Next, we traveled to the Ranthambore National Park for two days of wildlife safaris, with a special emphasis on the magnificent Bengal tigers that inhabit this park. We spent the remainder of the trip in the state of Chhattisgarh, where more than a third of the population is rural tribal people, often with unique customs and adornment. Focus locations in this latter segment included Bhoramdeo, Kanker and Jagdalpur. The first segment was terrifically led by Art Wolfe, whose website is http://www.artwolfe.com and the second segment splendidly shepherded by Gavriel Jecan, whose website is http://www.internationalphototours.com. In-country arrangements were flexibly made by Amit Sankhala’s Dynamic Tours, Pvt. Ltd., with more details at http://www.adventure-india.com; Harendra Singh, our local guide throughout the tour, was a treasure in every way.
