Mekong and More 2014
These images were captured during a trip to Southeast Asia in October and November, 2014. The trip started with 10 days in northern Vietnam and continued with an Avalon Waterways cruise of the Mekong river, originating in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and concluding in Siem Reap, Cambodia (the Angkor Wat area). We finished with several days each in Luang Prabang, Laos and Bangkok, Thailand. The northern Vietnam portion was capably organized by Indochina Odyssey Tours, with terrific local guide Thong Bui; see http://www.indochinaodysseytours.com for more background. The excellent cruise director for the Mekong cruise was Mark Nicholls.
Read MoreLuang Prabang, Laos. A monk accepts rice from one of the devout during the early morning tak bat. During the tak bat, starting at dawn each morning, a line of monks moves silently along the streets, accepting alms (usually sticky rice in Luang Prabang). The ritual confirms the symbiotic relationship between the monks and the almsgivers who maintain them. Almsgivers gain merit and the monks gain needed food.
